Kid Knits

We are pleased and proud to be partnering with The Hive@305 and Kid Knits!
Kid Knits was founded 2 years ago by a local philanthropist, 11 year old Ellie.  You can read her story here.  Ellie’s motto is “You are never too young to change a life on the other side of the world”.
On July 9th, 2013 from 1-3pm, we will be offering a loom knitting class, geared towards children, though all are welcome.  The class will take place at The Hive (located on the same floor as The Fiber Universe), with Knitting instruction provided by The Fiber Universe and Kid Knits founder, Ellie.  Cost is $20, and you can sign up in store or on our website
Your $20 covers the Kid Knits kit, which includes:

  • One ball of hand-spun yarn from either Chile or Rwanda, enough to knit one hat and help lift a woman and her family out of poverty.
  • One sustainable, eco-friendly cotton carrying bag for all your knitting supplies, hand-sewn in Chile, Rwanda, or Liberia
  • One personalized gift tag which shares information about the woman that has spun your yarn.
  • One KidKnits logo tag, made in Nairobi, Kenya from recycled aluminum cans.
  • One 9 1/2″ round loom, One knitting hook, and One needle.

Alpaca Allure

I think sweater season is just around the corner- and knitters want luxury.  Our surprise best seller this week was Misti Alpaca Chunky.  We had several customers stop in with plans to make sweaters, and they decided that Misti Alpaca was the perfect blend of style, softness, and indulgence.

And I got inspired!  I am not a sweater maker (yet), but still wanted to use this yarn.  I found a pattern for a wrap/scarf/shawl that I thought would be perfect, the “High Line“.  (Pattern available in-store if anyone else gets the Misti bug!)  It calls for 4 skeins, yet makes a wrap big enough to keep me cozy.  It’s knit on 15’s, and I already have 2 chart repeats done.  Bonus: a quick knit!  It would also be a great “first lace” project.

I’m feeling like another trip to the local Alpaca farm is in order….

Spinning Competition!

We held our first annual Fiber Universe Spinning Competition last night!!  It was a fun way for our spinners to test their skills and show their creativity.  The categories were longest thread, spinners triathlon, creative spinning, and rainbow round robin.  The spinners triathlon was definitely the most entertaining, as the competitors had to spin blindfolded for one section, and then spin while wearing rubber gloves for another.  Everyone had a great time, especially the spectators!

Choices, choices, choices!

We had a fantastic trip to Columbus for The National Needlework Association Spring Convention!!  We learned a lot, made some great new friends, and most importantly saw LOTS of new yarn!!!  I was amazed (and overwhelmed) by how many great yarn companies we saw.  And at each and every company they have so many wonderful yarns from which to choose.  Of course, as well as new yarns, we met lots of designers, and we even met the Ravelry team!!  That’s right – and to prove it, here’s a picture of Melinda and I with Jess and baby Eloise.  We also made friends with Debbie Bliss, and lots of up-and-coming designers!

Columbus can also boast some of the finest ice cream available at Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams.  And again there, we had to choose, choose, choose.  Queen City Cayenne or Bangkok Peanut?  Roasted Strawberry Buttermilk or Wildberry Lavender?  Salted Caramel or Pistachio and Honey?

So I know you are dying to know which choices we made.  And the truth is that we tried all of the ice creams, and they were all fantastic.  As for the yarns…you will just have to stop in the store in August and September as our new choices arrive…I hope you will be as excited as I am by our new selections!
